TREE ENHANCEMENT FOR SHADE EQUITY: REPORT AND RECOMMENDATIONS FOR THE CITY OF PORTLAND

Report and recommendations for the City of Portland

Did you know that trees do more than shade our streets? Have you ever marveled at the sheer beauty and sense of calm and peace a tree can provide?

Trees In Urban Areas Provide Many Benefits, Including:

  • Promoting health and well being by alleviating stress, stabilizing blood pressure, and easing anxiety and depression.
  • Providing opportunities for healthy, active lifestyles.
  • Producing oxygen and cleaning the air.
  • Storing and soaking up carbon and carbon dioxide.
  • Protecting against flooding.

Trees are our first defense against so many climate related calamities. They clean the air and help insulate us from the worst effects of climate change, but the sad reality is that they are not being treated like the climate superheros they are by our City, State and many other interests seeking to reshape our landscape and improve the lives and safety of those who live and play in East Portland. East Portland has a disproportionately low canopy relative to the rest of the city and, if something isn’t done, it’s only going to get worse.

This is why Thrive East PDX Tree Enhancement for Shade Equity Initiative has compiled this report in hopes that the City of Portland, and others will begin treating trees like the critical infrastructure they are ensuring East Portland gets the life enhancing canopy we need and deserve.
