THRIVE East PDX announces its very own Fix-It Fair in East Portland

Portland Repair Fairs are free events that bring together people with various skillsets to fix their household items, share their knowledge with one another, and empower each other to repair, reuse, or repurpose broken items instead of throwing them away.

Even though in the spring of 2023 the City of Portland stopped offering Fix-It Fairs after 37 years of doing so, community organizations are hosting a growing number of similar events, as well as similar services (below).

Thrive East PDX is proud to announce our first Fix-It Fair in East Portland, on Saturday, March 30th, from 12:00 pm to 4:00 pm at the Center Powered by Y.O.U.T.H., 16126 SE Stark Street in Portland. The goal is to showcase community resilience in East Portland and how it can be accomplished by fixing things. Not only does being empowered to fix your own things save you money and increase your resilience, it’s also more environmentally friendly than throwing your broken item away and buying new ones.

What you can expect at Thrive East PDX’s Fix-It Fair

East Portland organizations that are members of Thrive East PDX are coming together to teach repair skills to community members and connect them to community resources, as well as to highlight their services and demonstrate what they do for the community overall.

Community members are invited to bring their broken bikes and/or clothing and learn how to repair them themselves through hands-on demos, skill share, and trainings. Although we can’t guarantee that all items will be repaired on the spot, participants are sure to leave with new knowledge and skills that they can apply to their lives. In addition to bike and clothing repair, folks can expect to learn about best home weatherization practices; how to remove carpet; how to lay tile; painting do’s and dont’s; how to unclog a toilet, sink or tub; how to stop a leaking toilet and pipe; and more.

The event is free to attend, appropriate for all ages (there will be free kids activities), and hosted in an accessible space. In an effort to be more green, we encourage attendees to get there via public transportation.
